Children’s Author Presents to Delsea HS Ninth Graders
Children’s author and illustrator, DyAnne DiSalvo spoke to the ninth graders at Delsea HS on Thursday, December 9 as part of their children’s book service learning project. Her talk focused on the writing process including ways to get inspiration for writing a children’s story along with illustration tips which were designed to assist the students as they began writing and illustrating their own children’s books that they will share with local elementary children for a Read Across America celebration in March.
Ms. DiSalvo shared photos from her author visit to the United Nations School in Hanoi along with stories of her trip to the SOS Orphanage in Hanoi. Delsea students celebrated literacy and a day to “Make a Difference,” by reading and collecting sponsors for their reading. Students collected donations totaling over $1000 for the SOS orphanage as part of a D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) Day activity. This charity was selected by guest author, DyAnne DiSalvo, who for the past three years, has waived her normal speaking fee in lieu of the students’ donation.
The ninth graders have been including a D.E.A.R. Day project as part of their service learning activity for the past seven years with over $10,000 being given to charities such as the American Brain Tumor Association, Habitat for Humanity, a camp for handicapped children, a local animal shelter, American Forest Organization and a literacy project in a women’s prison. The SOS Orphanage in Hanoi, is part of SOS Children’s Villages, the world’s largest orphan and abandoned children’s charity whose vision is to provide “a loving home for every child” whether children are AIDS orphans, street children, child soldiers or children orphaned by war, poverty or natural disasters. Ninth grade English teachers, Melissa Jernegan, Lisa Wasko, Ingrid Wagner and Paula Melnyk and school librarian, Mary Moyer were the co-sponsors for the project.
